Close Reading
Close reading “is an intensive analysis of a text in order to come to terms with what it says, how it says it, and what it means.”
- Tim Shanahan
Close reading is the act of reading closely. Students read and then reread and then read again - using annotation, questioning and discussion each time to dig into a text. The students are to find meaning using evidence from the text and pulling from other texts, videos, and articles. Teachers guide the process with text dependent questions. This process is the means to a bigger end of some type of culminating writing activity.
The ultimate goal is for the students to become active readers through close reading techniques as well as other guiding reading activities.
